Today, April 2, is the official Autism Awareness Day. As the slogan goes … “We color the world blue!”
It’s something close to my heart as I have one boy in my class who has autism and a girl who has PDD-NOS, a mild form of autism. I see first hand how hard it is for them to try to cope with society and how hard it is for society to cope with them.
The one thing I have learned from teaching these two (and others I had in class in previous years) is that they have their own little world with their own understanding of events. It takes a massive amount of patience of us, the so-called “normal” people to make sense of what they do and say. The best I can do is try to put myself in their place as much as I can. And take advantage of every bit of “learn-ability” they have.
So, today I color my world blue … and the moon, as I always aim high ;)
